Altered

Dominant ninth, sharp five chords

Dominant 9th with a raised 5th (R-3-#5-b7-9). The #5 (G#) is the augmented-fifth/b13 region of the whole-tone scale; combined with the natural 9 it produces the classic whole-tone dominant (C-E-G#-Bb-D are all whole-tone-scale members). Rootless here: C is absent, so the shape is pure 3-b7-9-#5.

In every key

Voicings

Written in C, because that is the key the encyclopedia authors them in; every one transposes unchanged.

RH 1-2-3-5 on E-Bb-D-G#; the D-G# tritone on top is the whole-tone signature — keep it bright.

Rootless Altered Spread (3-#5-b7-9)

LH 5-3-2-1 on E-G#-Bb-D; feel the even whole-step spacing and let the D top note lead the resolution.

Where it turns up

Whole-tone dominant color resolving up a fourth. Thelonious Monk and Mulgrew Miller use the 9#5 for its bright, suspended-augmented push into the tonic. The natural 9 softens the augmented 5th into a singable whole-tone sound.
