Play a Dm7, then a G7, then a Cmaj7. You have just played one of the most common cells in tonal jazz, and if you have taken a single jazz lesson somebody has already told you that.
What they may not have told you is why it is worth more than the ninety seconds it takes to learn. It is not because the progression is beautiful. It is that a great deal of what happens in TONAL jazz harmony is a substitution for one of those three chords, and a substitution is only audible against the thing it replaced. (Modal tunes, blues forms and static vamps play by different rules, and this piece is not about them.)
What the three chords are for
The I is home. Nothing to explain.
The V is tension, and specifically a tension with a direction. A dominant seventh chord contains a tritone — in G7, the B and the F — and that interval is unstable in a way the ear treats as a question. Both notes want to move, and they want to move in opposite directions: the B up a semitone to C, the F down a semitone to E. Play those two notes alone and then resolve them and you have the core voice leading of a major-key V7-to-I cadence in four notes.
The ii is the part people underrate. On its own, a V arrives from nowhere. The ii gives it a run-up. Dm7 is D, F, A, C and G7 is G, B, D, F: they share D and F, and the two notes that change move by step — A down to G, C down to B. Half the chord stays put and the other half slides, which is why the pair feels like one gesture rather than two chords.
What it looks like in a real pair of hands
The app carries a transcription of an Oscar Peterson ii-V-I, and it is worth looking at because it does not do what a method book would.

Two things to notice. The hands are far apart, which is a stride inheritance and is why the texture stays clear at the tempo he takes it. And the left hand is carrying the root, because he is often playing without a bass player doing it for him. Compare that with Bill Evans, whose ii-V transcription moves a single note between the two chords, and you have two completely different answers to the same three bars.
Neither is the correct one. They are solving different problems: one is a man alone with a piano, the other is a man in a trio.
The substitution everyone learns first
Here is the tritone substitution, which is the reason the tritone in the V chord matters so much.
G7 contains B and F. Now build a dominant seventh on Db, a tritone away from G. Db7 is Db, F, Ab, Cb — and Cb is the same key as B. So Db7 contains F and B, the same two notes as G7, in the opposite roles: what was the third of G7 is the seventh of Db7, and what was the seventh is now the third.
The two chords share the tension. They do not share a root. So you can play Db7 where G7 was, resolve it to C, and the tension resolves exactly as before while the bass line walks down by semitone — D, Db, C — instead of leaping a fourth. That semitone descent is the sound, and it is why the substitution turns up in ten thousand arrangements.
It works because of the symmetry of the interval. A tritone is exactly half an octave, so it is the only interval whose inversion spans the same six semitones — turn it upside down and a tritone is what you get back. That symmetry, together with the shared guide tones and the way both chords lead into the tonic, is the whole of the mechanism.
And then it keeps going
Once you have accepted that a chord can be replaced by something that shares its tension, the ii-V-I stops being a progression and becomes a set of slots.
Approaching from the flat seventh. Instead of arriving at the I from its own V, come from bVII. The textbook version of this is the backdoor DOMINANT, Bb7 to C, whose Ab supplies the pull. The app carries a gentler relative: a Bill Evans Bbmaj9 moving to Cmaj9, left hand Bb-D-A to E-B-D-G. That is a bVII MAJOR approach rather than the backdoor proper — no Ab, so no dominant tension — and the softness is exactly why it turns up in ballads.
The diminished route. The diminished seventh chord is another symmetrical structure — the augmented triad and the whole-tone scale are others — and it sits underneath a great deal of what looks like chromatic passing motion in a ii-V. Or leave one out. A great deal of modern playing simply omits the ii, or stays on the V for eight bars and never resolves, which is a decision you can only make deliberately if you know what the resolution would have been.
The minor version, which is a different animal
Everything above is the major ii-V-I. The minor one is not a transposition of it, and treating it as one is a common way to sound wrong in a minor key.
In minor the ii becomes half-diminished — Dm7b5 rather than Dm7, the fifth flattened from A to Ab — and the V usually arrives altered, carrying a flat ninth or a sharp ninth or both. The app stores the pair together as iiø-V7alt-i rather than as two unrelated chords.
That flattened fifth is the hinge. Ab is diatonic to C minor and simply is not in the major-key Dm7, so the minor ii announces the key it belongs to before the V has even arrived. The alterations on the V continue the same job. None of this is a rule about where the chords must go — a plain G7 can land on C minor and an altered one can land on C major — it is about which destination the cell is leaning towards.
If your minor ii-Vs sound like major ones with a sad chord at the end, the flattened fifth and the alterations are usually what is missing.
How to practise it so it transfers
The standard advice is to learn it in twelve keys, and the standard result is a player who can produce a ii-V-I on demand and cannot find one in a tune. Three better instructions:
- Play it in one key until you can hear the tritone move. Not the chords — the two notes. B to C and F to E. If you cannot hear those two lines inside the chords, twelve keys of it will be twelve keys of finger memory.
- Then play the tritone substitution in the same key, back to back with the original. The point is the comparison. A substitution learned in isolation is just another chord.
- Then find one in a tune you already play and mark it in the chart. A great many tonal standards are largely built from ii-V motion in different keys wearing different rhythms, and the moment you start seeing it the sheet music gets much smaller.
The third instruction is the one that changes anything. The progression is not worth studying as an object. It is worth studying because it is the unit that a great deal of the tonal-jazz repertoire is assembled from, and once you can see the unit you stop reading tunes one chord at a time.
Questions people actually ask
- Why is it called ii-V-I and not 2-5-1?
- The Roman numerals carry information the digits do not: upper case means a major triad, lower case means minor. Written ii-V-I you can see at a glance that the first chord is minor and the other two are not, in any key, without being told which key you are in. Jazz musicians say "two five one" out loud and write it in numerals for exactly that reason.
- Does the ii chord actually do anything, or is it decoration?
- It prepares the V. On its own a dominant chord arrives from nowhere; the ii supplies the run-up, because the two chords share two of their four notes and the V's root sits a fourth above the ii's. You can leave it out and the music still works — plenty of tunes do — but what you lose is the sense that the V was heading somewhere before it got there.
- Is a tritone substitution the same as a flat-five substitution?
- Yes, and both names describe the same move from different directions. The substitute chord's root sits a tritone away from the original's, which is also the flattened fifth of that root. Db7 for G7, either way you count it. The names survive side by side because one describes the interval and the other describes the scale degree.
