Play three notes: B, C, E, bottom to top, close together.
B to C is a half step. C to E is a major third. The whole thing spans five semitones, which is to say it fits inside a normal hand with nothing stretched. Over a C bass it is a major seventh chord — the seventh, the root and the third, in that order, with the seventh underneath the root rather than above it.
That is the shape. Almost everything below is the same three fingers pointed at a different part of the harmony.
The four families
The shape is always a half step with a third stacked on it. What changes is which notes you build it from, and there are only four cases.
On a major seventh chord: the 7th, the root and the 3rd. In C, that is B–C–E. The half step is the seventh rubbing against the root it is supposed to resolve to, held rather than resolved.
On the other chords of a major key — the ii, the V, the sus, the Lydian and the Phrygian: the 3rd, the 4th and the 6th of the KEY. In C major, E–F–A. Not of the chord — of the key. One hand position for five chords, because all five are made from the same seven notes. Your hand does not move; the bass moves, and your three fingers change what they are doing. Note the size of the claim: those five chords, in that key. It is not a shape you can drop over anything.
On a melodic-minor chord: the 2nd, the 3rd and the 5th of the melodic-minor key. In C melodic minor, D–E♭–G. Same interval pattern: half step, then a major third.
On a dominant seventh with a flat ninth: half step, then THREE semitones instead of four — the one exception — and four different places to put it.
The four dominants, and why there are exactly four
On a C7♭9, all four of these work:

Look at the bottom notes: C, D♯, F♯, A. Each sits three semitones above the last, and the fourth is three semitones below the first. (Spelled strictly, some of those steps are augmented seconds rather than minor thirds, which is bookkeeping rather than sound; on the keyboard the distance is three keys every time.) That is not a coincidence and it is not a mnemonic. A flat-nine dominant chord contains a diminished seventh chord, and a diminished seventh chord repeats every three semitones, so anything built on top of it repeats there too.
The practical consequence is the best thing about this voicing. Learn one of the four in one key and you have four, in that key, without learning anything else. Play them in sequence up the keyboard and you have the sound of a Monk piano introduction, which is what happens when a symmetrical device is played by somebody who is thinking about it structurally.
What the half step is for
A half step between two adjacent voices is not forbidden in jazz harmony, and anyone who tells you it is has not looked at enough scores. What is true is that it is usually placed carefully and usually placed high, where it reads as colour — a ♭9 above a dominant, a major seventh brushing a root at the top of a block chord. Put the same interval at the BOTTOM of a voicing and it stops sounding like colour and starts sounding like grit, because low intervals beat against each other in a way high ones do not.
This shape puts it at the bottom, every time, in all four families. That is what makes it a system rather than an effect: the dissonance is not something that happens to the voicing, it is the thing the voicing is built around.
It is also why the sound is so easy to recognise. You do not need a phrase. One chord with a half step underneath it, held rather than resolved, is already unusual enough to place.
The same decision, two hands wide
The three-note shape is the compact version. On records the same half step turns up inside much larger textures, and recognising it there is what stops this looking like a party trick.
Take a C7♭9 voiced with the root and the flat ninth at the very bottom — C and D♭, adjacent, low, where two adjacent notes are muddiest — and the third, fifth and flat seventh stacked above them. Those upper three, E, G and B♭, are a diminished triad, which is the same diminished sound the four flat-nine positions were built on. The half step is doing exactly what it does in the small shape, one octave lower and louder.
Or take the stride texture: a tenth in the left hand, C down low with the E above it, and in the right hand a B♭ and a B natural together, the flat seventh and the major seventh a semitone apart, with the third on top of them. Stride piano normally uses that left hand to be reassuring. Here it is holding the ground still while the right hand puts the two sevenths of the chord in the same fist.
Neither is a different idea from the three-note voicing. They are the same decision, made at a size where you cannot pretend you did not hear it.
The other half of it: what he leaves out
The three-note shape is the dense end of Monk. The other end is emptier than almost anyone’s.
Play a low C and, a long way above it, the B — the major seventh — and nothing at all in between. Two notes, and mostly silence. It is not a complete chord: no third means major and minor-major are both still open, and no fifth means the fifth’s quality is too. What it gives you is the one interval that says major seventh and nothing else at all, and in a context where the harmony is already established that turns out to be plenty.
Those two things are the same idea from opposite directions. The three-note voicing says: here is the dissonance, deliberately, at the bottom, where you cannot miss it. The two-note voicing says: here is the interval that matters and I have removed everything else. Both are refusals to fill the middle of the piano with the notes that are conventionally there.
Between them they account for a great deal of what makes a Monk record sound like a Monk record, and neither requires any technique you do not already have.
What to practise
Take the major-seventh shape — 7th, root, 3rd — around the cycle of fifths until the half step stops feeling like something to apologise for. That is the real obstacle, and it is not a technical one.
Then take the key shape: the 3rd, 4th and 6th of one major key, and move it over different bass notes without moving your hand. Play E–F–A over a D, then over a G, then over a C. Over the D it is the 9th, the ♭3 and the 5th — a minor chord with a ninth in it and no seventh anywhere, which is a lighter sound than a full minor ninth. Over the G it is the 13th, the ♭7 and the 9th, with no root and no third in your hand at all, which is precisely why it floats. Over the C it is the 3rd, the 4th and the 6th, which is a major sound with a fourth sitting in it.
Then the four flat-nine positions in one key, in order, up the keyboard. That is one device, not a whole dominant vocabulary — the same records will hand you a Lydian dominant and a bare tritone with the guide tones over it — but it is a device you acquired by learning one shape and moving it three semitones at a time, which is a good rate of return.
The thing to resist is treating any of this as a sound effect. The shape is a system, and the consistency is the point of it. Play it as a condiment and it sounds like an impression. Play it as your default for a week and the half step stops being something you are getting away with.
Questions people actually ask
- Is the minor second in Monk's playing a wrong note?
- Not in the system below. Mark Levine sets out a Monk-style three-note voicing in four versions, one for each chord family, and every one of them has a half step at the bottom — the interval is load-bearing rather than incidental. What that establishes is that the sound can be built deliberately and taught, which is the useful part for a player. How often Monk himself reached for this particular grip on any given night is a question for a transcription, not for a rule.
- Do I need big hands to play Monk voicings?
- Not for these. Every one of the four families spans four or five semitones — three fingers inside the distance most people can reach comfortably. The wide-open sound in Monk's playing comes from the gap between the hands rather than from a stretch inside one of them, which is a completely different problem and one you solve by moving your arm.
- Why does the same three-note shape work on so many different chords?
- Because for the chords the rule actually names it is built from the KEY rather than from the chord. The 3rd, 4th and 6th of C major are E, F and A, and those three notes work over the ii, the V, the sus, the Lydian and the Phrygian chords of that key, because all of them are made from the same seven notes. It is not a universal solvent: the grip supplies three notes and the bass supplies one, so between them they may leave the quality of the chord genuinely open.
